How It Started
I'm Robertino, a father of three daughters. Two of them have played (or are currently playing) NCAA Division I basketball. Both went through the full recruitment process, and I was right there alongside them for every step.
We're not from the United States. Where we live, basketball is a club sport. There are no college scholarships, no recruitment calendars, no NCAA eligibility centers. When my oldest daughter started getting serious about playing college basketball in America, we were stepping into a completely unknown world.
Conversations with dozens of coaches. Names of colleges we'd never heard of. Terms we didn't understand. Dead periods, contact periods, NLI, NIL, the clearinghouse... everything was new. We had more questions than answers, and finding reliable information felt nearly impossible.
Slowly but surely, we figured it out. Google became our best friend. I built Excel spreadsheets to track every conversation, every coach contact, every college detail. We learned what questions to ask, what red flags to watch for, and how to evaluate whether a program was the right fit, not just athletically, but academically, socially, and financially.
My oldest daughter successfully committed and went on to play D1 basketball. But the journey didn't end there. During her five years (due to covid), she transferred twice. The transfer process brought its own set of challenges. But through it all, we gained hard-won knowledge about how the system really works, both going in and navigating through it.
The Moment Play2College Was Born
When my youngest daughter recently started her own recruitment journey, I found myself going through the same process again. And it hit me:
There has to be a better way. No family should have to start from zero, piecing together information from scattered sources, hoping they don't miss a crucial deadline or make a decision they'll regret.
That's when I decided to build Play2College: a platform with all the tools, guides, and information we wish we'd had when we started. Not a corporate product designed to sell you something, but a genuine resource built by someone who has lived this journey. A place where families can find everything they need, make informed decisions, and help each other along the way.
Built with Care
Outside of this project, I've spent over 25 years as a lead developer for multiple large corporate web platforms and created one of the largest community platforms in the Netherlands. That background is what I bring to Play2College.
We do our utmost to comply with security standards and take the necessary precautions to protect your data. No platform can guarantee it will never be compromised, but we treat your information with the same level of responsibility you'd expect from any professional platform.
