Revenue Sharing is Here
The House v. NCAA settlement was approved on June 6, 2025. Schools that opt in can now pay athletes directly, with an annual cap of about $20.5 million per school in 2025-26, rising to roughly $21.3 million for 2026-27. This fundamentally changes how you recruit — athletes weigh direct compensation alongside scholarships, facilities, and program fit. Third-party NIL deals over $600 must clear the College Sports Commission's review process.

Transfer Portal Updates
Unlimited transfers are now allowed for academically eligible athletes — no sitting out required. However, transfer windows still apply per sport. D1 football now has a single winter window only (spring eliminated). Basketball windows were shortened in January 2026. A 15-day coaching change window opens 5 days after a new head coach is hired.

Roster Limits Replace Scholarships
The settlement replaced scholarship limits with hard roster limits — for example 15 in men's and women's basketball and 105 in football. Every roster spot can now be funded, so the recruiting question shifts from "is there a scholarship?" to "is there a roster spot?" "Designated" student-athletes may remain above the limit temporarily during the transition.

College Sports Commission
A new enforcement body — the College Sports Commission (CSC) — has been established to monitor revenue sharing payments and NIL deals. MLB executive Bryan Seeley was hired as CEO on June 6, 2025. The CSC will oversee enforcement of the new rules around revenue sharing and third-party NIL deals.

The "5-for-5" Eligibility Clock
In June 2026, Division I adopted an age-based "5-for-5" model: athletes get five seasons over a five-year window that starts at first full-time college enrollment or the academic year after their 19th birthday, whichever comes first. Redshirts and most extension waivers are gone, so a recruit's birth date and enrollment history now tell you exactly how much eligibility they bring. See the eligibility clock.

No More Letter of Intent
The National Letter of Intent was eliminated in October 2024. Commitments are now formalized through your institution's written offer and financial-aid agreement rather than the NLI. The 5-visit cap on official visits is also gone — recruits can take unlimited official visits (one per school), so program fit and timing matter more than ever.
