Your playbook to and through college

Recruitment Talking Points

The right questions to ask college coaches at every stage of your recruitment — tailored for international student-athletes and their families

Last Updated: February 2026

How to Use This Guide

Talking to college coaches can feel overwhelming, especially for international families unfamiliar with the U.S. system. This guide organizes the most important questions by recruitment stage so you know exactly what to ask and when. Each stage builds on the previous one — start with the basics and work your way toward the details that matter most for your decision.

Pro Tip: Don't try to cover everything in one conversation. Pick 5–8 questions per call, take notes, and compare programs side by side. Coaches expect these questions — asking them shows you're serious.

Focus: Building the relationship and understanding whether the program is a good fit. Research the school's conference, record, and location before this conversation.

About the Coach & Staff
  • What's your coaching philosophy and playing style?
  • How do you develop players over their college career?
  • What's your experience recruiting and coaching international players?
  • How long have you been at this program, and what are your long-term plans here?
Playing Role & Fit
  • What position and role do you see me playing?
  • Why are you recruiting me specifically — what stood out?
  • What areas of my game would you want me to develop?
  • What does your offensive and defensive system look like?
Team & Culture
  • What's the team culture like — on and off the court?
  • How many international players are currently on the roster?
  • What are your expectations for freshmen in the first year?
NCAA Eligibility Basics
  • Am I registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center? (If not, do this immediately)
  • What are the academic requirements for eligibility? (D1 requires a 2.3 GPA in 16 core courses; SAT/ACT is no longer required by the NCAA since 2023, but some schools still require it)
  • Do international credentials from my country need special evaluation?
  • Is there a minimum TOEFL or English proficiency score required?
  • Has your school opted into the House v. NCAA settlement? (This affects revenue sharing and scholarship structure)

Focus: Deeper dive into academics, support systems, and program expectations. This is where you assess whether the school can support you both as a student and an athlete.

Academic Support
  • What majors are available and which are most compatible with an athlete's schedule?
  • What academic support do athletes receive? (tutoring, study hall, dedicated academic advisors)
  • What's the typical daily class schedule for athletes during season?
  • What are the graduation rates for athletes on your team specifically?
  • Do you offer ESL programs or English language support for international students?
  • Is summer school available, and is it covered by the scholarship?
International Student Support
  • Is there a dedicated international student services office?
  • Who specifically helps with visa processes, I-20 forms, and immigration documentation?
  • What happens during school breaks when dorms close — where do international students stay?
  • Are there cultural organizations or international student groups on campus?
  • How many international students are currently enrolled at the university overall?
Training & Development
  • What does a typical day and weekly schedule look like for athletes?
  • What are your strength and conditioning programs like?
  • What training facilities and sports medicine resources are available?
  • What's the practice schedule during season vs. off-season?
  • Are players expected to stay on campus and train during summer?
Roster & Playing Time
  • What's the current roster composition at my position?
  • How many players are graduating or entering the transfer portal?
  • How do you determine playing time — is it earned in practice?
  • What's your redshirt policy? Would you consider redshirting me?
  • What is the program's policy on the NCAA transfer portal?

Focus: Financial details, scholarship specifics, and daily life. This is the most important stage — get clear answers and always involve a parent or guardian in these conversations.

Financial & Scholarship Details
  • Is this a full or partial athletic scholarship? (Since the 2025 House v. NCAA settlement, all sports — including basketball — now use an equivalency model, meaning partial scholarships are possible even in basketball)
  • What does the scholarship cover exactly?
    • Tuition and fees
    • Room and board
    • Books and supplies
    • Meal plan
  • Is academic scholarship money available in addition to athletic aid?
  • What is the total Cost of Attendance (COA) and what will my family still need to pay?
    • Personal expenses and spending money
    • International flights home
    • Health insurance (mandatory for F-1 students)
    • Phone plan, laptop, and other essentials
  • Is summer school included in the scholarship?
  • Does the scholarship cover a 5th year if I need one to graduate?
Revenue Sharing (House v. NCAA Settlement)
Important for International Students: Under the House v. NCAA settlement (approved June 2025), schools that opted in can pay athletes directly — up to $20.5M per school per year. However, F-1 visa holders currently cannot receive these direct payments due to immigration restrictions. This creates a gap between domestic and international athletes on the same team. Ask these questions to understand your situation.
  • Has your school opted into the House v. NCAA settlement?
  • How does revenue sharing work at your program — and who is eligible?
  • What is the school doing to support international athletes who cannot receive revenue sharing payments? (Some schools are finding alternative support through enhanced scholarships or other benefits)
  • How are revenue sharing payments distributed across sports and roster positions?
  • What is the school's roster limit for basketball under the new rules? (Men's basketball expanded from 13 to 15 roster spots)
NIL (Name, Image, Likeness)
  • Are there NIL collectives or institutional NIL programs that support athletes?
  • What are the NIL rules for international students on an F-1 visa? (F-1 students face significant restrictions — they generally cannot receive payment for appearances, sponsored content, or other active NIL work without proper work authorization like CPT/OPT)
  • Does the school's compliance office have experience navigating NIL for international student-athletes?
  • Does the school provide NIL education, tax guidance, and legal support to athletes?
  • Note: Legislation is being proposed (NIL for International Collegiate Athletes Act) to create a visa category allowing NIL work — but this has not yet been passed as of early 2026
Travel & Family
  • Is there any travel assistance for international students to fly home during breaks? (NCAA Student Assistance Fund may cover some costs — ask specifically)
  • How many complimentary game tickets are provided for family members?
  • What are the official visit arrangements? (travel, accommodation, meals)
  • Can you recommend affordable accommodations for visiting parents?
Housing
  • Where do freshmen live? (dorms, apartments, athlete housing)
  • What are housing options for years 2–4?
  • What's included in housing? (furniture, utilities, wifi)
  • What happens during winter/spring/summer breaks — can international students stay on campus?
  • Is summer housing provided if I'm training with the team?
Meals & Nutrition
  • What meal plan is included in the scholarship?
  • Is there an athlete dining hall or nutrition center?
  • Are pre/post-workout and game-day meals provided?
  • Is there a team nutritionist?
  • What dining options are available on campus?
  • Can dietary restrictions be accommodated? (religious, cultural, allergies)

Focus: Final details, commitment terms, and decision-making clarity. Never rush this stage — take the time you need to compare offers and make the right choice.

Scholarship Terms & Commitment
  • Is this a multi-year scholarship or year-to-year? (NCAA D1 schools can offer guaranteed multi-year scholarships — always ask for this)
    • What are the renewal requirements?
    • Under what conditions can it be reduced or not renewed?
    • What happens to my scholarship if I get injured?
  • What happens to my scholarship if the coaching staff changes? (This is critical — coaches leave programs regularly. Under current rules, a 15-day transfer window opens when a new head coach is hired)
  • When is the deadline to accept or decline this offer?
  • What is the National Letter of Intent (NLI) process and timeline?
  • Can I receive everything in writing before I commit?
  • What is the program's transfer policy? (As of 2026, the NCAA allows unlimited transfers without sitting out as long as you remain academically eligible — but transfer windows are sport-specific and limited in duration)
  • Will I receive revenue sharing payments, and if so, how much? (If the school opted into the House settlement — remember that F-1 visa holders currently cannot receive these)
Health & Medical
  • What health insurance is provided for athletes? (F-1 students must have health insurance — confirm the scholarship covers it)
  • What sports medicine and athletic training staff are available?
  • What's the injury rehabilitation protocol and timeline to return to play?
  • Is mental health counseling available to athletes?
  • What medical facilities and emergency care are near campus?
Life After College
  • What career services and job placement support are available to athletes?
  • Are there internship opportunities during the academic year or summer?
  • What is the alumni network like — do former athletes help current ones?
  • Do you support athletes pursuing professional basketball careers after college?
  • What about Optional Practical Training (OPT) for international graduates? (OPT allows F-1 students to work in the U.S. for 12 months after graduation)
Final Decision Questions
  • Can I speak with current international players on the team about their experience?
  • Can I connect with players from my country or region?
  • What specifically makes your program the best fit for an international student-athlete?
  • How will you support my transition to living in the United States?
  • What are your expectations of me academically and athletically from day one?

Visa & Immigration
  • Who is the Designated School Official (DSO) that issues the I-20 form?
  • How soon after committing will you issue my I-20 for the F-1 visa?
  • What documentation does the school need from me for the visa process?
  • What support is there for visa renewals and maintaining F-1 status?
  • Can I get a Social Security Number for on-campus work?
Timeline & Transition
  • When should I arrive on campus — is there early arrival for athletes?
  • Is there a specific orientation for international student-athletes?
  • When does pre-season training start?
  • What do I need to bring and what will be provided?
  • How do I set up a U.S. bank account and phone plan?
Safety & Campus Life
  • How safe is the campus and surrounding area?
  • What campus security is available? (24/7 police, emergency services, escort services)
  • What's the local community like — is it welcoming to international students?
  • What's the weather/climate like year-round? (Important if coming from a warm country)
Transportation & Location
  • Do I need a car, or is everything walkable/accessible?
  • Is there public transportation or campus shuttles?
  • How far is the nearest major airport? (For flights home)
  • How do athletes travel to away games?

Red Flags to Watch For

If you encounter any of these, proceed with extreme caution:
  • Pressure to commit immediately — without an official visit or time to compare offers
  • Vague or evasive financial answers — coach won't clarify exactly what the scholarship covers
  • No international student support — school has no clear process for visa, I-20, or housing during breaks
  • Won't provide anything in writing — verbal promises without documentation
  • High roster turnover — many players transferring out could signal deeper problems
  • No access to current players — won't let you speak with athletes already on the team
  • Poor graduation rates — indicates lack of academic support or priorities
  • Recent NCAA violations — check the school's compliance history before committing
  • Asks you to misrepresent credentials — never falsify academic records or test scores
  • Unrealistic promises — guarantees of starting, playing time, or professional career
  • No transparency about revenue sharing — school won't explain whether they opted into the House settlement or how payments are distributed (and whether international students are excluded)
