The Triple Challenge

As a freshman international student-athlete, you're facing three major adjustments at once: new country, new academic system, and college-level athletics. This is completely normal!

Academic Adjustments

U.S. college academics differ significantly from other systems:

  • Participation grades matter - speak up in class
  • Office hours are encouraged, not a sign of weakness
  • Group projects are common
  • Academic integrity is strictly enforced

Athletic Culture Differences

College sports in the U.S. are unique:

  • Coaches expect mental toughness and coachability
  • Team bonding is crucial for success
  • Balancing academics and athletics is mandatory
  • Media attention and fan support can be intense

Social Integration Tips

  1. Join international student organizations
  2. Attend campus events and activities
  3. Be open about your background - people are curious!
  4. Find a mentor (upperclassman from your country)

Managing Homesickness

It's normal to feel homesick. Combat it by:

  • Scheduling regular calls home (but not too frequent)
  • Creating a support network on campus
  • Staying busy with activities
  • Seeking counseling if needed - it's confidential and helpful

Remember: Every international student goes through this. You're stronger than you think!
